Identifying climate change impacts on surface water supply in the southern Central Valley, California

چکیده
Mountain regions in arid and semi-arid climates, such as California, are considered particularly sensitive to climate change because global warming is expected alter snowpack storage related surface water supply. It therefore important accurately capture snowmelt processes watershed models for impact assessment. In this study we use the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) estimate projected changes streamflow four alpine tributaries agriculturally but less studied southern Central Valley, California. Watershed responses evaluated CMIP5 (HadGEM_ES, CNRM-CM5, CanESM2 MIROC5) two emission scenarios (RCP 4.5 RCP 8.5) 2020–2099. SWAT calibrated following a dual-objective, lumped calibration approach with an automatic against observed (stage 1) manual reconstructed Parallel Energy Balance (ParBal) snow equivalent (SWE) data 2). Results indicate that under climate, peak increase 0.5–4 times magnitude coming decades arrive 2–4 months earlier year of snowmelt. foreseeable future, cover will reduce gradually lower elevations diminish at higher rates elevation towards end 21st century. Surface supply predicted Valley increased temporal variability (wetter wet seasons drier dry seasons) create new challenges managing The further highlights remote sensing based, SWE could fill current gap limited in-situ observations improve better predict impacts semi-arid, snow-dominated watersheds.

Drought impacts to water footprints and virtual water transfers of the Central Valley of California
The Central Valley of California is one of the most productive agricultural locations in the world, which is made possible by a complex and vast irrigation system. Beginning in 2012, California endured one of the worst droughts in its history. Local impacts of the drought have been evaluated, but it is not yet well understood how the drought reverberated through the global food system. Here we ...

Climate has always been changing during the lifetime of the earth, and has appeared in the form of the ice age, hurricanes, severe and sudden temperature changes, precipitation and other climatic elements, and has dramatically influenced the environment, and in some cases has caused severe changes and even destructions. Some of the most important aspects of climate changes can be found in preci...

متن کاملEmissions pathways, climate change, and impacts on California.
The magnitude of future climate change depends substantially on the greenhouse gas emission pathways we choose. Here we explore the implications of the highest and lowest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emissions pathways for climate change and associated impacts in California. Based on climate projections from two state-of-the-art climate models with low and medium sensitivity (Paral...
متن کاملWater constraints on European power supply under climate change: impacts on electricity prices
Recent warm, dry summers showed the vulnerability of the European power sector to low water availability and high river temperatures. Climate change is likely to impact electricity supply, in terms of both water availability for hydropower generation and cooling water usage for thermoelectric power production. Here, we show the impacts of climate change and changes in water availability and wat...
